Meggings

on Thursday, December 20, 2012

Todays rant, my fellow fashionistas, is about that ugly ugly (I know I wrote that twice, because it really is that ugly) trend which is emerging for men. Meggings. Yes, male leggings. My first reaction when I read about this was absolute stunned silence. I thought it was a cruel cruel (again writing it twice is warranted) joke.

Years ago we saw men evolve into what they call metro-sexuals. I applauded this as women put so much effort into their appearance to keep looking young and fit that it was only fair for men to do the same. If my partner expects me to look 20-something when I am 30-something, you bet that I have the same expectations of him.

But meggings? Haven’t we taken this metro thing a bit far? First there was skinny jeans and let’s face it only a small percentage of men can pull the look off successfully. Those men who are skinny and who project a certain image. It’s not for everyone.

It seems as if the skinny jean was not skin tight enough……enter the megging. I can only dread to see this trend catching on as most women struggle to grasp the concept of wearing leggings properly. They are not trousers, you have to wear something that covers your bum. If women can’t figure that out, can you imagine how many clueless men will be walking around without the necessary bits covered? I say no, just no to this new fashion craze.

White

on Wednesday, December 19, 2012
Even though white is synonymous with winter in many places around the world, it is not in South Africa. Although current fashion trends seem to want to convince us that we dream of a white Christmas.

I love white incorporated into an outfit as much as the next person, but I tend to be conservative and keep it to a gorgeous fitted blouse, shirt or a simple white t-shirt. I remember when white trousers were all the rage and yes, I owned a pair. One of my problems with wearing white is that it makes you look bigger. This is fine if that is your intention and concentrate the colour to certain parts of your body, but let's face it, some of us buy what's in fashion and do not really think beyond this. No consideration is given to the size -2 model on the billboard and that my realistic dress size won't exactly resemble this. Thus many faux pas are created.

I am a brave girl when it comes to fashion, yet white shoes terrify me. I am of the believe that they belong on a bride's feet and even then must be very carefully chosen. I am not a huge fan of the "white" trend and this may be largely attributed to the fact that I cannot go a day without spilling something. I am a classic klutz. This coupled with me being a very pale blonde, I always feel as if I blend into the colour instead of it complimenting my complexion.  The closest I come to white shoes is beige. Maybe it's just me.

I am sure the trend looks gorgeous on girls who are an appropriate size and with a darker and more exotic complexion, it is just not for me.
