Win some uber pamper time with Crystal Clear #FFF

on Saturday, February 8, 2014

Today I am excited! Why, you ask? It's my turn to run the #FFF competition with Crystal Clear this week. If you do not know what that means, where have you been?

Tash kicked it off on her blog last week and I couldn't wait for it to be my turn. #FFF stands for February Friday Facial competition with Crystal Clear. If you entered with her and unfortunately didn't win, here's another chance and the good news is that the competition will run for the entire February. These lovely ladies are running the competition on their blogs next - Luzanne and Chicara.

To win an indulgent facial with Crystal Clear, all you have to do is following:

1. Follow @CrystalClearZA on Twitter
2. Tweet:
I want to be pampered with a February Friday Facial with @CrystalClearZA and @AnneDoli #FFF

It really is THAT simple.

Not only can you win a fabulous facial, but if you are one of the lucky winners, you can tweet or even blog about your experience. The winner with the most retweets, favourites and comments will win a skin care hamper that is customised to their skin type. *I'm having a total girl moment here*

I don't think I have to say much more to get you to enter. Every woman deserves some pamper time, so go ahead and enter. I will announce the winner on Friday afternoon by 16h30.

If you need some extra incentive to enter, you can read some reviews on Crystal Clear here, here and here. Still not convinced? Sheez, you're a tough cookie, but I understand, I also like to do proper homework before I dive head first into something. You can also check them out on their website over here

All that's left to say is Good Luck!

Challenge Accepted

on Tuesday, February 4, 2014
Oh My Vogue! Look how cute these nails are! Okay, I get very excited about such things. It's called a French Valentine.

Obviously that is not MY hands in the picture. Although I am pretty good at doing a good manicure, even a creative one which includes different colours, I am not this skilled.

I was sent a step by step guide by Essie on how to create this look, and you all know how much I love doing new things with my nails. This is definitely going to test my nail-polish-ninja powers, that's for sure. Challenge Accepted.

I'll explain in brief how to do it, but I'd rather leave it to the expert, Michelle Saunders, an LA based manicurist to do it properly. She has a celebrity client list as long as my arm and also heads up the Essie team backstage at New York Fashion Week. So, I assume that she must know her stuff with that street cred.

Before you start on your nails, always make sure that they're clean and prepped with a base coat. It's much healthier for your nails, it helps prevent harsh colours from staining your nails and it's a great foundation for your nail polish.

Let's start, shall we? The most important thing you'll need before you start is time. Make sure that you can sit back and not have to touch ANYTHING for the next two hours or so. This goes for whenever you do your nails. The silly things smudge so easily and then it's RUINED! We don't want that. That said, pour yourself a glass of wine, put your bum on the couch and have your favourite series on the tellie. We all have a series we're dying to catch up on and here's your excuse to do just that. The wine will help with the inevitable frustration you'll experience as a mere mortal trying to perfect an intricate look, thus this is perhaps the most important part of your prep. Comfortable? Great. Wine? Great. Series? Great. Now we are ready to start.

The following three colours were used in creating this look:
Ballet Slippers, Fiesta and Lollipop

Step 1
Paint all your nails with Ballet Slippers, do two coats (it's always two coats with nail polish, why can't someone just make a nail polish that you only need to do one coat with?) - leave to dry for two minutes - or in my case, at least 10, I always manage to smudge my nails! It's one of my many superpowers. You may take a swig of your wine while you wait for it to dry.

Step 2
Apply Fiesta in two half circles to the top half of your nails, kind of like the top of a heart - again, let this dry for like 20 minutes! Just to be sure that you don't have to redo it later (this happens to me often) My nails are sometimes done so creatively, then *SMUDGE* and I don't have the patience to redo it the same way..... #girlproblems. More wine will be required here as you try to get those half circles perfect.

Step 3
With Lollipop, follow the lines of Fiesta, but leave a bit of the pink peaking out. It should look like double hearts - I cannot stress this enough, leave to dry for at least half an hour. Trust me on this. This is your cue for more wine.

After you are convinced that your nails are completely dry (surprise, they're NOT), wait another 10 minutes. Believe me, they're not dry. Just do it and have the rest of that wine. Or another glass.

Finish it off with a top coat. This makes sure that your nails stay pretty for a long time. To ensure that your nails stay chip free for even longer, let your minions do most of your work, especially housework. Washing dishes and cleaning are the enemy of manicures! I think women all over should protest against doing anything that can chip our manicures. Even if just for a few days.

Here's a video that probably explains it better:

I have decided to try this in the next week or so, and will post a picture. I may also take some pictures of my progress and possibly document it. I predict that there will be a lot of bad language that goes along with the frustration of trying to get this perfect.

Wish me luck!

Where do all my fabulous clothes come from?

on Saturday, February 1, 2014
Ever wondered where our clothes come from? Who is sitting behind the sewing machines in order for us to look fabulous? I have often thought about this but chose not to dwell on it for too long.

Wonder no more. I stumbled onto this video that follows the journey of a t-shirt. Meet Doris and Jasmine. Okay, I'm pretty sure that there's a very slim chance that Doris and Jasmine actually made what you and I are wearing RIGHT NOW, but this video gives you an idea of how the majority of our clothes are made.

These two women live in vastly different societies and it made me very grateful (yet again) that I live in a society that allows me to pursue a career that I love, one that permits me to live comfortably and buy / wear all the cute outfits that my heart desires, and pretty much let's me do / say whatever I want, when I want. We forget how free we really are. We forget that being able to be whatever we want, is a privilege.

Kitten heels - cute or not?

on Sunday, January 26, 2014

I was catching up on my glossy mag reading yesterday and a realisation dawned on me. Kitten heels are back in fashion. I don't really know how I feel about this. I have never been a fan. I mean, if you're going to wear heels, commit. Wear a proper heel, not something between a flat and a heel. I don't know, maybe it's just me. I know that my really tall friends wear them and they look great, it gives them that feeling of being able to strut their stuff and not feel like giraffes. Although, if I were tall, I'd wear the highest heels possible and own my Glamazon status.

13 Fashion Trends That Lasted Way Longer Than They Should Have

on Monday, January 13, 2014

I came across this article via Huffington Post today and thought that I'd share it with you as well as give my own cometary in pink.

13 Fashion Trends That Lasted Way Longer Than They Should Have

Despite the fact that they're inherently short-lived, some fashion trends manage to hang on, lingering in our closets for much longer than they should.
Below, a list of trends that are still going strong... even though, in our humble opinion, their moment was over about five minutes ago. Have you ditched these yet?

Boyfriend Jeans - I love these personally, purely because you can wear it any way you like. You can dress it up or have a more casual look. I think they're still a winner.

Wedge Sneakers - I have to admit, I've never been a fan of these and never will be. Maybe because I'm not the tallest girl and these cut my legs at a very awkward place and doesn't flatter my legs at all. I'll pass on these.

Huge Sunglasses - I adore HUGE sunglasses. I think every woman should have a pair or five.

Circle Scarves - I've always hated these and never saw the point to them, ever. Can't people learn how to wear normal scarves? What's up with the circle scarf?

Peplums - They were great for the first two seasons they came out. Then I got really tired of them, really quickly. This trend should have died four seasons ago already. Every time I see a girl in a peplum anything, I vom in my mouth a little bit. That's just my personal opinion.

Fedoras - I think they're cute and add whimsy. I like them :)

High-Waisted Cutoffs - Never been a fan of these, because I think your trousers should be longer than the pockets. It looks great on 0.02% of women who are skinny, glamorous and self-confident enough to pull these off. "Normal" women look horrid in these.
cutoffs

Oversized Bags - Say what you want about the oversized bag, it is useful. Women need a lot of things at hand and they're perfect. I think they're a winner, can't have too many.

Mocassin Boots - again, probably because I'm not the tallest woman, these make me look stumpy and I don't like them.
mocassins

Double Denim - Double denim wasn't pretty in the 80s and you need a ridiculous amount of self-confidence to pull this one off without looking like you're stuck in 1982.

Turban Headbands - only "free-spirited" women can pull this one off and look amazing. If you have the look and the hair, go for it. I'm quite jealous, to be honest.
turban

Maxi Dresses - these hide a multitude of sins and they look good. Love these.

Floppy Beanies - Again, if you're Hipster enough to pull it off, more power to you.
